Small pauses inside a nursing curriculum

Penn Nursing’s recent briefing asks what changes when short mindfulness practices sit inside an existing course.

A pause in the working day.

Penn Nursing has highlighted a curriculum project that embedded one-to-five-minute mindfulness modules in doctoral nursing coursework. The underlying paper appeared online on 22 September; the school’s 21 October briefing was distributed through Newswise on 23 October.

Access was part of the design

Students completed surveys and focus groups after the curriculum. More than 90 percent rated it acceptable, appropriate and feasible. This was a quality-improvement project about student experience, rather than a controlled treatment trial. For teachers, the useful design question is how a small practice fits into an already demanding day, without treating individual self-care as a substitute for better working conditions.
