Yoga and yogasana return to a recognition dispute

A Delhi High Court order asks India’s sports ministry to explain a naming difference, while leaving federation recognition undecided.

A practice, a name and a formal process.

A November 3 Delhi High Court order revisits the words used in India’s national sports federation recognition process. SportsNet News reports the development and provides copies of the order and the ministry’s September notice.

An interim direction, not recognition

The order quotes the court’s July direction to invite eligible bodies to apply for recognition for Yoga/Yogasana. The September 3 ministry notice used Yogasana. The Yoga Federation of India, which applied on September 17, raised concern that applying for Yoga could lead to rejection.

Justice Amit Mahajan directed the ministry to file an appropriate affidavit within four weeks. In the meantime, the order says the federation’s application must not be rejected solely because it sought recognition for Yoga. The next listing is January 14, 2027.

This is a limited procedural development. The order does not designate a recognized national federation or settle the larger meaning of yoga. For readers following its life as a competitive sport, the distinction is useful: the wording of an application process is under scrutiny, while the final recognition decision remains outstanding.
