What a student remembers about a yoga teacher

A personal column connects a teacher’s presence in class with the ordinary kindness of sharing a recipe.

A recipe and a practice can both become points of connection.

In an October 26 Shaw Local column, Elaine Fisher-Ohlund writes about Nathan Kisiel Kyaura Kersey, whose classes she has attended at Riverside Health Center and Soul Moon Studio in Bourbonnais, Illinois. Her account moves between his energetic teaching and a conversation about homemade cheesecake.

The details that stay with a student

Fisher-Ohlund describes a teacher she enjoys learning from, and the small exchanges that help a relationship develop beyond class instructions. A shared interest in cooking becomes part of her portrait of him. This is one student’s appreciative account, rather than an independent assessment of his teaching. For instructors, it offers a useful reminder that students may remember an everyday gesture as clearly as the sequence on the mat.
