Studying yoga beyond a teaching certificate

University programmes place language, history and philosophy alongside practice as a different kind of continuing study.

Yoga studies can extend beyond preparation to teach a class. Loyola Marymount University and Naropa University both describe graduate programmes that bring academic inquiry into conversation with practice. Their programme pages foreground subjects such as yoga’s histories, philosophical traditions and Sanskrit.

Choose the question first

The formats differ. LMU describes two- and three-year pathways, while Naropa describes a low-residency programme combining online learning with residential study in Colorado. These are existing programme options, not newly announced degrees. For a teacher considering further education, the starting point may be the question they want to investigate: historical context, language, interpretation or the relationship between scholarship and practice. Academic study and a teaching certificate serve different purposes; neither should be assumed to replace the other.
