Questions worth asking before the first class

A revised collection of teachers’ perspectives makes a case for looking beyond a training-hour total.

A Yahoo Lifestyle explainer updated on 28 October collects yoga teachers’ responses to common assumptions about practice. Among them, Cheryl Albright encourages prospective students to ask a teacher about their background instead of treating a training-hour total as a complete account of expertise.

A useful introduction invites questions

The distinction is practical. A number can describe part of someone’s training without explaining what they studied, whom they teach or how they respond when a student needs a different approach. These are questions a first conversation can begin to answer.

A student might ask how a class is organised, what experience the teacher has with newcomers, and how questions or adaptations are handled. A teacher can answer plainly without promising a particular emotional or physical result. The explainer contains varied opinions, not a tested method for selecting a teacher. Its useful contribution is permission to ask about the experience behind an introduction.
