Free yoga brings community practice to downtown Jackson

An outdoor class can introduce yoga through a place people already know. In Jackson, Mississippi, instructor Ebony Archie has been doing that through Sol&Self Co. and a collaboration with Downtown Jackson Partners.

A shared place to begin

In an October 22 profile, the Mississippi Free Press describes a free spring series at Smith Park and a four-week autumn series that began on September 12. The sessions connect teaching with public space, giving residents another way to spend time together downtown.

The story follows Archie’s own introduction to yoga and her return to Jackson. Her project illustrates a practical form of partnership: an instructor contributes the teaching, while a local organization helps bring the class into a community setting.

The reported series had specific dates. Readers should check directly with the organizers for future sessions rather than assume that classes continue every Saturday. The broader idea remains worth noticing: a welcoming practice can begin with a familiar park and an invitation to turn up.
