Five days with one chapter of the Yoga Sutra

A New Delhi workshop gives sustained attention to the Vibhuti Pada and its classical commentary.

The Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga opened a five-day national workshop in New Delhi on October 26, running through October 30. According to India’s Press Information Bureau, the programme studies the Vibhuti Pada of the Patanjala Yoga Sutra through the Vyasa Bhashya commentary, with former Banaras Hindu University professor Krishna Kant Sharma as subject expert.

Keeping study and evidence distinct

The third chapter considers concentration, meditation and absorption, alongside traditional accounts of yogic attainments. A workshop organised around one chapter makes space for interpretation and discussion rather than a quick collection of techniques. These are philosophical and historical teachings; describing their place in a tradition does not establish extraordinary powers as scientific fact. Returning slowly to a text can also help teachers distinguish what a source says from what they personally infer.
