An online balance trial reports an early Parkinson’s result

A conference abstract describes a 139-person trial, with encouraging balance scores and important limits to what is reported.

A European Journal of Public Health conference abstract published online on 26 October reports a trial of telehealth mindful yoga for people with Parkinson’s disease and balance impairment. The abstract appears in the journal’s October supplement. Researchers assigned 139 participants to a 12-week Zoom programme or usual care with a waitlist.

An abstract provides a starting point, not the full report

The authors report better functional balance scores in the yoga group at three months, with some gains sustained at six months, and 81.7 per cent adherence. Assessors were blinded, but the comparison was usual care rather than a matched group activity.

The available abstract does not provide the full protocol, detailed safety results or evidence that fewer falls occurred. Changes on a balance scale should not be presented as proof of fall prevention. Detailed reporting would help teachers distinguish the programme’s conditions from general online practice. Its practical question concerns supervised online rehabilitation, with further reporting needed before drawing broader conclusions about ordinary yoga classes.
