A Southampton studio takes its teaching beyond the room

Kathy McCarthy combines a hometown base with travelling classes and equipment that students can borrow.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette profiled Kathy McCarthy’s Traveling Yoga Company on 29 October. Opened in Southampton, Massachusetts, in August 2025, the studio provides a base for classes that also travel to other Pioneer Valley communities, including Northampton, Easthampton and Chicopee.

A base can support more than one format

McCarthy, a retired nurse with more than 40 years of nursing experience, teaches formats including beginner, chair, restorative and slow-flow yoga. The report describes equipment available for participants to use and a timetable updated weekly around different classes and events.

The combination offers a concrete way to think about access: a recognisable local room, teaching in other settings and fewer things a newcomer must bring. The profile describes one teacher’s approach rather than evidence that the model will work everywhere. Its strongest detail is the movement between a rooted community base and classes shaped for different groups.
